Professor Wierman Receives IEEE William R. Bennett Prize

Adam Wierman, Professor of Computer Science, alumnus Minghong Lin (PhD ’13, CS), and colleagues has received the 2014 William R. Bennett Prize for their paper Dynamic Right-Sizing for Power-Proportional Data Centers. The William R. Bennett Prize is awarded annually by the IEEE Communications Society for the best original paper published in any journal financially sponsored or co-sponsored by the Communications Society in the previous three calendar years.

Best Paper on System Operations and Market Economics

Adam Wierman, Professor of Computer Science, and colleagues have received the award for Best Paper on System Operations and Market Economics at the IEEE PES General Meeting for their paper entitled "A unifying approach for assessing market power in deregulated electricity markets."

Professor Wierman's Student Receives Best Student Paper Award

The Best Student Paper Award at the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Performance conference in 2013 was given to Caltech alumnus Minghong Lin (PhD CMS '13) for his paper entitled Joint optimization of overlapping phases in MapReduce.

Best Paper at Green Computing Conference

Professor Adam Wierman, along with students Zhenhua Liu and Minghong Lin have received the Best Paper award at the IEEE Green Computing Conference for their paper "Online algorithms for geographical load balancing". The paper provides near-optimal algorithms that can cloud services to implement "follow the renewables" routing, and to take advantage of solar and wind energy.

Geographical Load Balancing with Renewables

Professors Adam Wierman and Steven Low, along with CMS graduate students Zhenhua Liu and Minghong Lin have received the best paper award at the ACM GreenMetrics conference for their paper "Geographical Load Balancing with Renewables". The paper provides algorithms that can allow renewable energy to be efficiently used by geographically distributed data centers (such as those used by Google) in order to almost completely eliminate the usage of brown energy. Professor Wierman Receives ACM SIGMETRICS Rising Star Researcher Award

Adam Wierman, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, is the recipient of the 2011 Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) SIGMETRICS Rising Star Researcher Award.  The award recognizes his outstanding contributions in the design and analysis of scheduling policies, which provided fundamental insights into scheduling and fairness in modern computing systems.

Professor Wierman and Minghong Lin Receive the IEEE International Conference Best Paper Award

Adam Wierman, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, and graduate student Minghong Lin have received the Best Paper award at the IEEE International Conference on Computer Communications (INFOCOM) for their paper "Dynamic right-sizing for power-proportional data centers."  The paper provides a novel algorithm for dynamically adjusting the number of active servers in a data center to optimally trade of energy consumption with delay. Graduate Student Minghong Lin Named Finalist in Facebook Fellowship Program

Minghong Lin, graduate student working with Professor Wierman, has been named a finalist in the Facebook Fellowship Program. This is an extremely competitive program that seeks to support Ph.D. students doing groundbreaking research in computer science. Minghong became a finalist for his research on improving the energy-efficiency of data centers.

Professor Wierman and Jayakrishnan Nair Receive the IFIP International Symposium Best Paper Award

Adam Wierman, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, and graduate student Jayakrishnan Nair have received the best paper award at the IFIP International Symposium on Computer Performance, Modeling, Measurements and Evaluation (PERFORMANCE) for their paper "Tail-robust scheduling via Limited Processor Sharing." The paper provides a new policy that can optimally schedule, under both heavy-tailed and light-tailed workload, by learning only the first-order workload statistics. Prior to this work, all known policies required learning  the entire workload distribution to achieve such guarantees. [Read the paper]

2010 ASCIT Teaching Awards

Adam Wierman, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, and Glen A. George, Lecturer in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, have been chosen by the Associated Students of the California Institute of Technology (ASCIT) to receive 2010 ASCIT Teaching Awards. These awards recognize individuals who inspire and motivate students, are approachable, and present course material effectively and efficiently.
