Twenty-five years ago, in December 1988, Professor Alain J. Martin's research group at Caltech submitted the world’s first asynchronous (“clockless”) microprocessor design for fabrication to MOSIS. MOSIS is the oldest integrated circuit foundry service and one of the first Internet services other than supercomputing services and basic infrastructure such as E-mail or File Transfer Protocol. Professor Alain describes this landmark project in his recent paper "25 Year Ago: The First Asynchronous Microprocessor."

Kevin Chen, an undergraduate student in Computing and Mathematical Sciences, working with Professor Alain Martin is the recipient of the 2013 Henry Ford II Scholar Award. Kevin is interested in research in asynchronous VLSI systems and is working with Professor Martin to develop automated synthesis tools for such systems. The Henry Ford II Scholar Award is funded under an endowment provided by the Ford Motor Company Fund. The award is made annually to the engineering student with the best academic record at the end of the third year of undergraduate study.

Alumni Tony (Tak) Lee (PhD '95, Computer Science ) and Paul Penzes (PhD '02, Computer Science) have been recognized by Broadcom as 2012 Distinguished Engineers. These former students of Professor Alain Martin, have joined a small group of exceptional Broadcom engineers who consistently go above and beyond the call of duty and are widely recognized by peers as experts in their field. Tony (Tak) Lee is Associate Technical Director of the Broadband Communications Group and was honored for his contributions to Advanced Forward Error Correction Technologies. Fulcrum Microsystems Inc., a company founded by former students of Professor Alain J. Martin, has been acquired by Intel Corporation. Computing and Mathematical Sciences (CMS) alumni Uri V. Cummings (Ph.D. '05) and Andrew M. Lines (M.S. '95) founded Fulcrum Microsystems in late 1999 to commercialize on the nearly two decades of work that they and Professor Martin had done to come up with clockless, low-power, high-bandwidth chips for managing switched communications.
