Anima Anandkumar Named an ACM Fellow

Anima Anandkumar, Bren Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, has been named a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for "contributions to tensor methods for probabilistic models and neural operators." The ACM Fellows program recognizes the top 1% of ACM Members for their outstanding accomplishments in computing and information technology and/or outstanding service to ACM and the larger computing community. Fellows are nominated by their peers, with nominations reviewed by a distinguished selection committee.

Caltech and Activision Publishing Team Up to Combat Bad Behavior Online

Rapid Adaptation of Deep Learning Teaches Drones to Survive Any Weather

Professor Anandkumar´╗┐ Tackles COVID-19 with AI

A pair of papers coauthored by Anima Anandkumar, Bren Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, were selected as finalists for the 2021 Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Gordon Bell Special Prize for High Performance Computing-Based COVID-19 Research. The purpose of the award is to recognize the innovative parallel computing contributions towards the solution of the global crisis. "All the six finalists this year had some component in their calculations that used AI," Anandkumar says. New Caltech Center for Sensing to Intelligence (S2I) Launches Collaboration with Industry Partner

The Caltech Center for Sensing to Intelligence (S2I) has announced that, in collaboration with Rockley Photonics, a photonics-based health monitoring and communications solutions company, it will allocate $1.5 million in research grants over the next three years to jumpstart efforts to combine sensors with artificial intelligence. "We would like to have sensors in every device these days, generating a huge amount of data," says Azita Emami, Andrew and Peggy Cherng Professor of Electrical Engineering and Medical Engineering and the director of S2I. Anima Anandkumar Elevated to IEEE Fellow

Anima Anandkumar, Bren Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, has been elevated as a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for contributions to theory and applications in signal processing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Machine Learning Speeds Up Quantum Chemistry Calculations

A new quantum chemistry tool, called OrbNet, uses machine learning, quantum-chemistry calculations that can be performed 1,000 times faster than previously possible, allowing accurate quantum chemistry research to be performed faster than ever before. Anandkumar Training Algorithms to Spot Online Trolls

Anima Anandkumar, Bren Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, and research team have demonstrated that machine-learning algorithms can monitor online social media conversations as they evolve, which could one day lead to an effective and automated way to spot online trolling. "It was an eye-opening experience about just how ugly trolling can get. Hopefully, the tools we're developing now will help fight all kinds of harassment in the future," says Anandkumar. The research team includes Professor Michael Alvarez; Anqi Liu, postdoctoral scholar; Maya Srikanth, student; and Nicholas Adams-Cohen, Stanford University. [Caltech story]
