Electrical Engineering alumna Piya Pal (PhD EE 2013) has been awarded the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award for her 5-year project, “Smart Sampling and Correlation-Driven Inference for High Dimensional Signals." Piya was a graduate student with Professor P. P. Vaidyanathan. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Maryland, College Park. [University of Maryland story]

The research of alumnus Asghar Aryanfar (’15 PhD, ME) along with Professors Goddard and Hoffmann has shown that heat can break down the damaging branch-like structures that grow inside batteries, which may possibly be used to extend battery lifetimes. [Read the paper]

Dr. Jakob J. van Zyl (PhD ’86 EE), Caltech Senior Faculty Associate in Electrical Engineering and Aerospace, as well as the Associate Director of Project Formulation and Strategy at JPL, will receive an honorary Doctor of Engineering (DIng) degree from Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Dr. van Zyl was born in Outjo, Namibia and received his first degree in electrical engineering from the University of Stellenbosch . He then came to Caltech where he obtained his Masters and PhD in electrical engineering.

The Caltech Robotics Team placed fourth in the 18th Annual International RoboSub Competition. The Competition is designed to introduce students to high-tech STEM fields such as maritime robotics. This year's team from Caltech was led by mechanical engineering recent graduate Justin Koch who was advised by Professor Joel Burdick. [Caltech story]

Alumnus Thales Papazoglou (MS ME ’70), who was advised by Professor Noel R. Corngold, has been awarded the Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE) Technical Committee Award for his contribution in the area of system operation and control.  He was a Professor of Electric Power, and Director of Electric Power Systems Laboratory at the Technological Educational Institute of Crete, Greece for 35 years.

Adam Wierman, Professor of Computer Science, alumnus Minghong Lin (PhD ’13, CS), and colleagues has received the 2014 William R. Bennett Prize for their paper Dynamic Right-Sizing for Power-Proportional Data Centers. The William R. Bennett Prize is awarded annually by the IEEE Communications Society for the best original paper published in any journal financially sponsored or co-sponsored by the Communications Society in the previous three calendar years.

Allen E. Puckett (PhD ’49 Aeronautics), pioneering aerospace engineer and chairman emeritus of Hughes Aircraft Co., passed away on March 31, 2014. He was one of the engineers who made Hughes Aircraft into the United States’ leading defense electronics firm which dominated in the markets for air defense, radar systems, tactical missiles and satellites. He began his PhD in 1941 at Caltech at the invitation of Theodore von Kármán. While at GALCIT he helped design a new supersonic wind tunnel, the first of its kind in the country. Later, he produced the calculations that led to the development of delta wing theory, which predicts the aerodynamics of supersonic aircraft and continues to be applied in the production of modern aircraft. Mary Baker (PhD ’72 in Applied Mechanics) and Richard Miller (PhD ’76 in Applied Mechanics) have been recognized by Caltech with the Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor regularly bestowed by the Institute. Dr. Baker, who is President of ATA Engineering Inc., was recognized for pioneering entrepreneurship and leadership in aerospace. Dr. Miller, who is President of Olin College of Engineering, was recognized for visionary leadership and commitment to innovation in engineering education for the benefit of society. The 2013 issue of ENGenious has won a silver award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VII in the Awards of Excellence category of Annual Magazines. The award is given by the CASE District VII Board of Directors and the Awards of Excellence Committee to "superior magazines published once a year." First published in 2001, ENGenious is a publication for alumni and friends of the Caltech Division of Engineering and Applied Science (EAS). The goal of the publication is to highlight the contributions of the EAS faculty, students, and alumni in research, education, and industry. [ENGenious]

Alumnae Niniane Wang (BS EAS '98) is the chief technology officer of Minted, a social-commerce company. She explains, "I’m one of those annoying people who loved everything about Caltech, starting with the day I first heard of it." As an undergraduate she was inspired by Professor Schroder and she recalls, "Peter Schröder at the time was quite an imposing professor. His first assignment to us was, 'If you don’t know C++, learn it now.' People rise to the level of expectations that you have for them. If you expect they’ll be strong, then they’ll be strong.
