Professor Kitaev Receives $3M Fundamental Physics Prize

Alexei Y. Kitaev, Professor of Theoretical Physics, Computer Science, and Mathematics, has received the $3 million Yuri Milner Fundamental Physics Prize. The prize citation recognizes Professor Kitaev's "theoretical idea of implementing robust quantum memories and fault-tolerant quantum computation using topological quantum phases with anyons and unpaired Majorana modes."  This new prize is the most lucrative academic prize in the world and Professor Kitaev is one of only nine scientists to receive it this year. Professor Daraio Wins Presidential Early Career Award

Chiara Daraio, Professor of Aeronautics and Applied Physics, has won a 2012 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). Daraio was recognized for her "pioneering contributions to nonlinear mechanical phenomena in acoustic crystals, granular material, and multifunctional nanostructures, and for mentoring women and providing research opportunities for high school and undergraduate students."

"The entire Caltech community is proud to see Professor Daraio recognized with this presidential honor, not only for her pioneering research accomplishments, but also for her commitment to students and diversity," says Chair Ares Rosakis. Professor Ravichandran Elected Fellow of AAM

Guruswami Ravichandran, John E. Goode, Jr., Professor of Aerospace and Professor of Mechanical Engineering, who is also the Director of the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories, has been elected as a 2012 Fellow of American Academy of Mechanics (AAM).  He recieved this honor for “his outstanding contributions to the understanding of mechanical behavior of materials under extreme loading environments.”

Aerospace Graduate Student Receives Young Investigator Award

07-23-12

Graduate student Francisco Lopez Jimenez, working with Professor Sergio Pellegrino, has been awarded a Young Investigator Award at the 8th European Solid Mechanics Conference. He received the award in recognition of his presentation, “Folding and Strain Softening of Carbon Fiber Composites with an Elastomeric Matrix.”

Professor Haile Receives International Ceramics Prize

Sossina M. Haile, Carl F Braun Professor of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering, is the 2012 recipient of the World Academy of Ceramics International Ceramics Prize for Research & Innovation. The Prize, which is only given out every four years, recognizes Professor Haile's work in using reactive oxides for creating solar fuels, and for advancing solid oxide fuel cells. [Past Recipients]

Professor Rosakis Receives P.S. Theocaris Award

Ares J. Rosakis, Theodore von Karman Professor of Aeronautics and Professor of Mechanical Engineering, is the recipient of the Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM) 2013 P.S. Theocaris Award. This award recognizes a senior professional who is a Fellow of SEM and who has conducted outstanding research throughout his career in the field of experimental mechanics. Philipp Boettcher Receives 2012 Richard B. Chapman Memorial Award

Philipp Boettcher, a graduate student working with Joe Shepherd, is the recipient of the 2012 Richard B. Chapman Memorial Award. Dr. Boettcher has observed and characterized a new puffing flame instability in premixed initially stagnant flammable mixtures. The award is given to an EAS graduate student in hydrodynamics who has distinguished himself or herself in research.

Charles Wilts Prize Winners

Mohammad Amin Khajehnejad and Ching-Chih Weng are the winners of this year's Charles Wilts Prize. The Charles Wilts Prize is awarded every year to one EE graduate student for outstanding independent research in electrical engineering leading to a PhD.

Xin Hu and Stephane Lintner Receive Carey Prize in Applied Mathematics

Graduate students Xin Hu and Stephane Lintner have received the W. P. Carey Prize in Applied Mathematics, awarded by a faculty committee in Applied and Computational Mathematics for outstanding doctoral dissertations. Dr. Hu's theses is entitled "Multiscale Modeling and Computation of 3D Incompressible Turbulent Flows." and Dr. Lintner's theses is entitled "High-Order Integral Equation Methods for Diffraction Problems Involving Screens and Apertures." Jeff Amelang Receives Excellent Teaching Assistant Award

Mechanical Engineering Graduate Student Jeff Amelang has won the 2012 Graduate Student Council (GSC) Excellent Teaching Assistant Award. This award is given by the GSC each year, with participating from the entire Caltech community, to one graduate student at Caltech.
