Thanos Siapas, Professor of Computation and Neural Systems, has received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Pioneer Award.  He plans to use the award to develop neural probes for large-scale recordings of brain activity. "Brain functions such as perception, learning, and memory arise from the coordinated activation of billions of neurons distributed throughout the brain," Siapas says. "While we know a lot about the properties of individual neurons, much less is known about how assemblies of neurons interact to perform computations. Our goal is to develop large-scale, multielectrode arrays that will enable the monitoring of many neurons simultaneously across different brain areas. We hope that such arrays will expose new fundamental insights into brain activity, and will find application in the study of animal models of brain disorders." [Caltech Press Release]

Postdoctoral Scholar Daniel R. Golovin and colleagues including Professor Andreas Krause have won the Outstanding Paper Award in the Computational Sustainability and Artificial Intelligence Track at the 2011 Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) Conference  for their paper entitled Dynamic Resource Allocation in Conservation Planning. The paper was selected from 975 submissions.  It addresses how computer science (in particular machine learning and adaptive optimization) can help conservation planning, by making recommendations about how to best protect rare species. Joseph E. Shepherd, C. L. "Kelly" Johnson Professor of Aeronautics and Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and colleague Kazuaki Inaba have received the 2011 G.E.O. Widera Literature Award for their paper entitled Flexural Waves in Fluid-filled Tubes Subject to Axial Impact.  This award is given annually to one outstanding technical paper published in the ASME Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology. Marin Kobilarov, a W. M. Keck Institute for Space Studies Postdoctoral Fellow, was a finalist for the best paper award in the 2011 Robotics: Science and Systems Conference - his paper is entitled Cross-Entropy Randomized Motion Planning .  The conference committee solicited original papers in all areas of robotics and followed a highly selective review process designed to select the best work of its kind in every category. Dr. Kobilarov is working on discrete geometric motion control of autonomous vehicles with Professors Mathieu Desbrun and Sergio Pellegrino.  [Read the paper]

Dr. Sander Weinreb, Faculty Associate in Electrical Engineering, has been awarded the Karl G. Jansky Lectureship. This is an honor established to recognize outstanding contributions to the advancement of radio astronomy. Weinreb’s development of the first autocorrelation spectrometer and the detection of the first interstellar molecule at radio wavelengths revolutionized astronomy. He has been a leader in the technological development of cm and mm astronomy throughout his career.

Professors Adam Wierman and Steven Low, along with CMS graduate students Zhenhua Liu and Minghong Lin have received the best paper award at the ACM GreenMetrics conference for their paper "Geographical Load Balancing with Renewables". The paper provides algorithms that can allow renewable energy to be efficiently used by geographically distributed data centers (such as those used by Google) in order to almost completely eliminate the usage of brown energy. Yue Yang, a graduate student working with Dale Pullin, is the recipient of the 2011 Richard B. Chapman Memorial Award. Dr. Yang has developed a novel Lagrangian formulation and multi-scale diagnostic tools to study fluid turbulence and vortex dynamics. The award is given to an EAS graduate student in hydrodynamics who has distinguished himself or herself in research.

Ye Lu, a junior student in Computing and Mathematical Sciences, with an interest in quantum simulations of atoms using graphic card programming techniques, is the recipient of the 2011 Henry Ford II Scholar Award. The Henry Ford II Scholar Awards are funded under an endowment provided by the Ford Motor Company Fund. The award is made annually to the engineering student with the best academic record at the end of the third year of undergraduate study.
