Professor Knauss Receives the 2010 Timoshenko Medal

Wolfgang G. Knauss, Theodore von Kármán Professor of Aeronautics and Applied Mechanics, Emeritus, has been selected to receive the 2010 Timoshenko Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers "for fundamental contributions to the mechanics of fracture, covering mixed-mode fracture, dynamic fracture, and interface and adhesive fracture; and the characterization of material response and failure at the microscale, with an emphasis on experimental mechanics." The Timoshenko Medal was established in 1957 and is conferred in recognition of distinguished contributions to the field of applied mechanics.

Professor Goddard Named to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

William A. Goddard III, Charles and Mary Ferkel Professor of Chemistry, Materials Science, and Applied Physics, has been elected to 2010 American Academy of Arts and Sciences class of fellows. Professor Goddard joins an assembly that was founded in 1780 by John Adams, James Bowdoin, John Hancock, and other scholars to provide practical solutions to pressing issues. [Caltech Today Article]

Harry Atwater Awarded Fred Kavli Distinguished Lectureship in Nanoscience

Harry A. Atwater, Jr., Howard Hughes Professor and Professor of Applied Physics and Materials Science, has been awarded the Fred Kavli Distinguished Lectureship in Nanoscience by the Materials Research Society. Chiara Daraio Wins ONR Young Investigator Award

Chiara Daraio, Assistant Professor of Aeronautics and Applied Physics, has won the 2010 Office of Naval Research (ONR) Young Investigator Award. The objectives of the Young Investigator Program are to attract to naval research outstanding new faculty members, to support their research, and to encourage their teaching and research careers. Professor Daraio's award is for her experimental study of nonlinear acoustic lenses with dynamically controllable focus. ONR announced 17 new awards in 2010. [View full list of Recipients]

Joel Tropp Awarded Sixth Vasil A. Popov Prize

Joel Tropp, Assistant Professor of Applied and Computational Mathematics, has been awarded the sixth Vasil A. Popov Prize. The Popov Prize recognizes distinguished research accomplishments in Approximation Theory and related areas of mathematics. It is awarded every third year and is restricted to young mathematicians removed less than 6 years from their doctoral degree.

Lemelson-MIT Caltech Student Prize Winners Announced

Congratulations to Heather Agnew, a graduate student in Chemistry, who received the $30,000 Lemelson-MIT Caltech Student Prize. Finalist Yvonne Chen, a graduate student in Chemical Engineering, received a $10,000 prize generously donated by Caltech Alumni Dr. Michael W. Hunkapiller. The winners were announced at a nationwide simulcast involving Caltech, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Joel Tropp is a Recipient of the 2010 Sloan Research Fellowship

Professor Krause Receives NSF CAREER Award

Andreas Krause, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, has been awarded the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award for his proposal "Coping with the Data Deluge -- Algorithms, Human Aspects and Applications" which investigates principled, scalable methods for extracting the most useful information from massive data sets. The CAREER program is NSF's most prestigious awards for junior faculty members. The level and 5-year duration of the awards are designed to enable awardees to develop careers as outstanding teacher-scholars.

Anthony Leonard and Richard Flagan Elected Members of the 2010 Class of the NAE

Anthony Leonard, Theodore von Kármán Professor of Aeronautics, Emeritus, and Richard C. Flagan, Irma and Ross McCollum-William H. Corcoran Professor of Chemical Engineering and Professor of Environmental Science & Engineering; Executive Officer of Chemical Engineering, have been elected members of the 2010 class of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). NAE membership honors those who have made important contributions to engineering theory and practice, and those who have demonstrated unusual accomplishments in the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology. Election to the NAE is one the highest professional distinctions an engineer can receive. Professor Flagan was elected to the NAE "for leadership in invention, measurement, production, and technology of aerosols" and Professor Leonard was elected "for contributions to simulation of turbulence, new vortex methods of flow simulation, and understanding of flow-induced vibration."
